Interview with José Mallent, specialist in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery and Director of the DRJM Clinic

?Is Plastic Surgery an art?

Without a doubt, it is an art combined with science. Personally, I do not understand plastic surgery - its reconstructive part and, above all, the aesthetic part - without a sense of beauty.

Plastic surgery is an extremely extensive and comprehensive specialty, encompassing everything from the scalp to the tip of the toe, from children to the elderly, including men and women, all types of organs and tissues - from the most superficial to the most internal: skin, muscles, bones… Therefore, a plastic surgeon has to be trained in many specialties: digestive, maxillofacial, vascular surgery, etc. Likewise, a plastic surgeon has to rotate to become imbued with proportion and a sense of beauty.

¿Always aesthetics is also health?

Yesí, it is always health, which, in fact, involves many factors. One of them is mental health. Being happy with your image influences the possibility of having good social and professional relationships.

¿What are the biggest aesthetic concerns of our society?

In general, they vary according to age, gender and circumstance. Lately, there is a lot of concern about the look, as face masks hide almost the entire face except for the eye area. Therefore, we are doing a lot of eyelid surgery and botulinum toxin treatments, fat fillers and hyaluronic acid fillers.

Another concern is the need for a more precise and precise treatment of the eyes.

Another concern - this one is more commonly seen in young people - is caused by the use of smartphones and the taking of selfies. When a photo is taken, there is a disproportion of the nose area and hence there is much demand for rhinoplasty.

In men we are seeing more and more concern about the chin, jowls and breasts. Breast augmentation, called gynecomastia, is solved by liposuction or combined with the surgical technique of subcutaneous mastectomy.

We register a lot of concern about breast volume in women, although we try to make them understand the importance of proportion. We are not in favor of putting too voluminous breasts, because the sense of beauty is the sense of naturalness. When a surgery is too noticeable, it ceases to have its meaning and interest.

?Where are the researches and advances of science within plastic surgery heading to?

Research is moving toward tissue engineering, which consists of the development of cellular tissues. These, for example, stem cells are used to create other tissues in laboratories without the need to extract to reconstruct the defect. Within this field, there is a fantastic world of chromosomal alterations, molecular biology, tumors and other open fronts.
