Artificial Intelligence’s Impact on Education Sector
Is Artificial Intelligence the World’s Greatest Future Know-How?
It is undoubtedly true that Artificial Intelligence (AI) attracts a lot of hype. It is genuinely a transformative technology that will considerably change our lives. Simply stating, Al is a capability of machines to interpret data and act intelligently. Al is going to change the way of thinking and acting. It is projected to have a long-lasting influence on every industry imaginable, e.g., Al has acted as the main chauffeur of emerging technologies like big data, robotics, and IoT.
It’s going to be interesting to see how society deals with AI, but it will definitely be cool. (Colin Angle, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and co-founder of iRobot)
AI is essential to the future as AI forms a foundation of computer learning. AI is becoming responsible for everything from climate change research to education. If implemented responsibly, it can benefit society, however, as an emerging technology; there is a real risk too.
Now think about the following issues associated with Al:
- First, Al increases and fuels other technology trends. Without AI, there would not be achievements such as virtual assistants, facial recognition, robotics, autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, etc. In major technological advancements, Al has played an enormous role, e.g medicine in the COVID-19 times, where Al is helping healthcare providers to make better medications for treatments, etc.
- Second, Al is more affordable for the mass audience. No need for expensive technology and/or in-house data storages. Today, Al is widely available as-a-service basis like an off-the-peg service solution for businesses of all sizes.
- Lastly, AI is everywhere. As machines are rapidly becoming more and more intelligent, they can carry more and more tasks revolutionizing industries. Therefore, automation across industries is visible, which raises a question about the displacement of many jobs. It is important to look at this issue from another perspective as well, where automation will also create new jobs that value human capabilities such creativity and empathy.
AI in Education Sector and at Transport and Telecommunications Institute (TSI)
Today, we might not see but there are many projects in the works that use computer intelligence to help schools, universities, students, lecturers, etc. to get more out of the educational experience. For example, textbooks are digitalized with help of AI, early-stage virtual tutors assist instructors and assess the facial analysis of learners to verify who is struggling, bored, or happy in the classroom, etc.
The major changes in education will be seen in a few decades, however, preparation for the potential changes is a must. Today, due to Al systems, students can learn from anywhere in the world at any time. Educational programs powered by AI are already helping students to learn various skills.
Starting from recruiting to choosing the best courses, intelligent computer systems help students to a received more personalized experience, tailored to their goals. This is where Transport and Telecommunications Institute (TSI) comes into play. After rigorous research and analysis, with partnerships from the University of the West of England (UWE), a bachelor study program (Double Degree), Computer Science: Software Engineering and AI was introduced to prospective students. The program covers wide aspects of data science. Students will learn making strategic decision makings based on data.
It is incredibly entertaining to live and to study in the age of artificial intelligence! What could be better than getting excellent education according to the UK quality standard, which will allow you to create artificial intelligence changing this extraordinary world yourself”. (Nadezda Spiridovska, Coordinator of the program, Assoc. prof. Dr.sc.ing.)
The Double Degree program is designed in cooperation with the University of the West of England (UWE). After years of study, students obtain diplomas from both universities, as well as a fantastic learning experience. According to British quality standards, there is a lot of group work and individual projects during the studies. The study results will be evaluated not only by TSI lecturers but also by UWE representatives. Moreover, within the double degree program framework, foreign lecturers and academia from UWE are invited to lead courses. Students will obtain intercultural communication skills and digital business capabilities through specially planned curriculum. Lastly, students in this program have access to the resources of both universities to better their educational experience.
Together with the University of the West of England, we offer a specialization that is targeted on Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering domain. Students who will be trained under this program are likely to be in high demand across the globe. (Boriss Misnev, Director of the Study Program, Professor, Dr. sc. ing.)
Al is everywhere! The outcome? Well, Education could look entirely different a few years from now! Join us at Transport and Telecommunications Institute at the heart of the Baltics – Latvia, Riga!
