“The Art of Clara Peeters” / Museo Nacional del Prado / Madrid

The Museo del Prado in collaboration with the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp and with the sponsorship of Fundación AXA presents its first exhibition on a woman painter: Clara Peeters. This Flemish artist specialized in still lifes, living and working in Antwerp in the first half of the 17th century.

With a selection of works similar to the one seen in Antwerp until 2 October, this exhibition brings together the finest examples from Clara Peeter’s small known oeuvre, estimated to total around 35 paintings. They include the four important works by the artist in the collection of the Prado, which makes the Museum an international reference point for the study of her artistic activities.

Following its display in Antwerp, the Museo del Prado presents an exhibition on Clara Peeters, a Flemish woman painter who belonged to the first generation of European artists to specialize in still lifes and one of the few professional women painters active in Europe in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Organized in collaboration with the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten [Royal Fine Arts Museum] in Antwerp, the inclusion of groups of important works by Peeters aims to highlight the achievements of this gifted and sophisticated painter, who was also one of the few women artists active in Europe at this time.

Both the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue offer the most updated analysis of Peeters’ life and work currently available, locating her in the cultural and artistic context of Antwerp and also place the focus of attention on the situation of women artists in early modern Europe, when widespread prejudices served to impede their progress in numerous ways.
