At The Lady Elizabeth School, the new academic year started with a real buzz! More pupils than ever before have enrolled at both the Primary and Secondary schools, in anticipation of the new developments and exciting facilities that will be opening soon. A further attraction in addition to the well-established, high standards of teaching and learning is that the School is now the only British International School in the region to offer an exceptional quality of boarding facility. In the past those pupils living outside the catchment area of the School were left disappointed and unable to enrol. However, following the introduction last year of Full, Weekly and Flexi boarding, many more pupils now have the chance to take advantage of the inspirational education on offer by becoming part of the boarding community.

The School offers a modern villa-style of boarding in Javea under the care and supervision of a highly qualified and professional Head of Boarding and support team with many years of experience in the British education sector. Headmaster, Richard Wijeratne, was delighted to be welcoming boarding students from a variety of countries including Spain, Scotland, Ukraine, Russia, China and Kazakhstan who have been attracted to study the British curriculum in Spain.

It is intended that the warmth of School life is extended to our two residential houses, with pupils supported and encouraged to enjoy their experience in a multicultural environment. We look to equip each pupil with the academic and social tools to succeed in their chosen field when they graduate from School – what better way to do so for our senior pupils, than to give them this level of confidence and an amazing sense of achievement in their own abilities beyond the classroom.

With the popularity of Harry Potter, boarding in the UK was given a much higher profile and many more of the benefits have been highlighted to both parents and pupils. Here in Spain, parents are becoming more aware of the way in which life skills and a sense of maturity and self-development are some of the key attributes of boarding. Having study support in the evenings, making strong bonds of friendships with students from other countries, learning to live as a close group who help each other are all elements of being a boarding pupil.

Susan Basham-Gamble, new Head of Boarding, has really enjoyed her first week with both returning and new students.

I believe that pupils really do start to develop an awareness of themselves as much as others – the need to co-operate and help, even with the simplest things like tidying up, learning to cook, problem solve and develop social skills – will all add to their personality and character as we support their studies and academic strengths on their journey towards University or vocational study away from home. We have had a wonderful week, getting to know each other and setting up our routines and both the boys and girls houses are becoming a second home to them already.

You and your family will be most welcome!
